When cities come under siege, the lives of ordinary people are turned upside down, and each must face impossible choices in the struggle to survive in a war zone. Bodies and minds are equally under attack; as ordinary people struggle with hunger, inadequate medical care, snipers, and bomb blasts, they carry on, seeking friendship, love, intimacy, and the pleasure of a cigarette. At one point, a small group of movie lovers taking refuge in their neighborhood video store faces a moral dilemma: whether or not to burn the movies they’ve rented and cherish in order to stay warm.
