Synopsis:
Khartoum is a surprisingly powerful hybrid documentary that draws hopeful human stories from the civil war and military regimes that have plagued the Sudanese people for decades. Four Sudanese filmmakers interview five people from different walks of life in Khartoum, only to have them flee the country due to the military coup, and to be transformed into a more imaginative work in which the characters act out what happened to them in the studio, on a green screen. Two children trying to survive on the streets, a mother selling tea, an activist and a civil servant tell us about different aspects of living in Khartoum through their experiences and dreams. Shot in Khartoum, Cairo and Nairobi with loaned phones and enhanced with animations, this film is unique.
Khartoum is a surprisingly powerful hybrid documentary that manages to extract aspiring human stories from the civil war and military regimes tormenting the Sudanese people for decades. While four Sudanese directors interview five inhabitants of Khartoum from different backgrounds, the military coup in the country obliges them to leave the country and continue enacting their stories in studio, before a green screen, transforming the documentary into a more creative work. Two children trying to survive in the streets, a single mother who sells tea, an activist and a civil servant show us different aspects of life in Khartoum through their experiences and dreams. Shot in Khartoum, Cairo and Nairobi with borrowed telephones and enriched with animations, this film possesses a unique quality.
