Lukas Dhont's new film Close, following the tremendous success of Girl, which we saw at Filmekimi in 2018, this time deals with the growing pains in the transition from childhood to adolescence. Close follows two very close friends at the age of thirteen: Léo and Rémi. When their friendship suddenly breaks down, Léo cannot make sense of what is happening and decides to consult Rémi's mother Sophie. The idea for the film came to director Dhont when he visited his old elementary school: "Even today, I still haven't made peace with my painful years in elementary and middle school. So I wanted to write about those feelings and express that world from my point of view. I wrote a few words on paper: friendship, intimacy, fear, masculinity... and Close came out of that. In a way, I feel that I am both Léo and Rémi; there is a piece of me in both characters". Close was nominated for an Oscar in Belgium.
